Goalball Melbourne 2017 is Coming!

Want to see athletes flinging their bodies in front of a 1.25Kg blue missile while under the added pressure of being totally blindfolded! All for the sake of stopping a goal and winning glorious gold medals!

Don’t miss this chance!

The Australian Goalball Championships come to Collingwood College, Melbourne from October 4 - October 7 and with it the best of the Nations Goalballers will be battling it out for the bragging rights of Australian Champions!
Goalball is a Paralympic sport for people with a vision impairment. Goalball enjoys great popularity in Australia and around the world and was the 2nd most popular spectator sport at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

Goalball is a fast and exciting game where vision impaired athletes try and roll or bounce a bell -ball into the back of their opponent’s goal. The game is played by partially blind and totally blind athletes and because of this all athletes are required to wear totally blacked out eyeshades to ensure a “level playing field” for all participants. The ball weighs 1.25kg and has bells in it so the players can track the ball and try and prevent it from scoring. Once blocked that team retrieves the ball and hurls the ball at the opposition team to try and score themselves. The fastest throwers in the world have been timed at throwing the ball up to 90km per hour! Needless to say, the thought of blocking a 1.25kg ball with your body when you can’t see it coming and it is travelling up to 90km an hour means that this game is not for the faint hearted!

This tournament will feature some outstanding Athletes:

Our newly crowned World Champion Youth Girls team – The Aussie Glow will all be there. The Youth Girls recently returned from Budapest where they took the World Crown from Russia in a tense final 9-6. The star of this great team Brodie Smith was also the leading Goal Scorer for the tournament and her 8 goals in the final ensured her team’s success.

Murray Elbourn said: So proud to be the coach of the first Australian team to win Gold at a World Goalball Championship. People have asked me if there is no competition as if to say: ”Have you beaten anyone good?” Our pool had 4 of the top 5 teams in the tournament so I'd say yes!

Also, we will have the athletes from our Women’s Rio2016 and London2012 Paralympic Goalball Team representing several states. These dual Paralympians are dominating Australian Goalball and we can look forwards to some amazing games particularly between New South Wales and Queensland where many of the Australian women’s team are drawn from.

Finally, can the Victorian Men break through to reclaim that elusive Men’s Title that has evaded them since 2006. Led by Australian representative Sam Byrne the team is hoping to end the drought on home soil and put Victoria back on the National Goalball podium.

The Victorian Goalball Association is hosting Goalball Melbourne 2017 from October 4th to October 7th, 2017 at Collingwood College, Cromwell St and McCutcheon Way Collingwood, Victoria.
